Reported Speech: Command/Request (-라고/달라고 하다)

-라고 하다 reports commands, while -달라고 하다 reports requests directed at the speaker. When someone says '빨리 와!' (Come quickly!), you report it as 빨리 오라고 했어요 (They told me to come quickly). When someone says '도와줘' (Help me), you report it as 도와달라고 했어요 (They asked me to help them).

The distinction between -라고 and -달라고 is important: -라고 is for commands where someone tells another to do something, while -달라고 is specifically for requests where the speaker asks for something to be done for them. For example, 문을 열라고 했어요 (told to open the door) vs. 문을 열어 달라고 했어요 (asked to open the door for them).

For negative commands (don't do), use -지 말라고 하다: 떠들지 말라고 했어요 (They told us not to be noisy). This pattern completes the four types of reported speech essential for intermediate Korean.
