So That/In Order To (-도록)

-도록 is a versatile conjunctive ending with three main uses. First, it expresses purpose: 늦지 않도록 일찍 출발했어요 (I left early so that I wouldn't be late). Second, it expresses degree or extent: 목이 아프도록 노래를 불렀어요 (I sang to the point that my throat hurt). Third, it is used in commands/requests: 조용히 하도록 하세요 (Please be quiet — literally 'please do so that you are quiet').

-도록 can often be interchanged with -게 in its purpose meaning: 잘 보이도록/보이게 앞에 앉았어요 (I sat in front so I could see well). However, -도록 tends to be slightly more formal and is preferred in written Korean.

This pattern is important for TOPIK Level 3 writing tasks, where expressing purpose, giving instructions, and describing extent are common requirements.
