In the Middle of (-는 중)
-는 중
Expresses that an action is currently in progress, meaning 'in the middle of doing'.
Pattern
Verb stem + -는 중(이다) / Noun + 중(이다)
Explanation
-는 중 expresses that an action is currently underway. 중 means 'middle' or 'during', and combined with -는, it emphasizes that the action is happening right now. 공부하는 중이에요 means 'I am in the middle of studying'.
This pattern is slightly more emphatic than -고 있다. While -고 있다 simply states an ongoing action, -는 중 stresses that the person is currently occupied with the activity and perhaps should not be interrupted. It is commonly used to explain why you cannot do something else.
With nouns, use 중 directly: 회의 중 (in a meeting), 식사 중 (during a meal), 통화 중 (on the phone). These noun + 중 combinations are extremely common in everyday Korean and on signs.

Common Mistakes
Wrong
공부는 중이에요.
Correct
공부하는 중이에요.
For verb-based expressions, use Verb stem + -는 중. 공부 alone would need 공부 중 (noun + 중).
Wrong
먹고 있는 중이에요.
Correct
먹는 중이에요.
Do not combine -고 있다 with -는 중. Use one progressive form, not both together.
