Location/Time Marker (에)
에
에 marks a location of existence, a destination of movement, or a specific point in time.
Pattern
Place/Time + 에 + Verb
Explanation
The particle 에 is one of the most versatile in Korean. It serves three main functions at the beginner level: marking the location where something exists, the destination of movement, and a specific time.
For location, 에 is used with 있다/없다 (to exist/not exist): '학교에 있어요' (I am at school). For destination, it pairs with movement verbs like 가다 (to go) and 오다 (to come): '학교에 가요' (I go to school). For time, it marks specific time expressions: '세 시에 만나요' (We meet at 3 o'clock).
Note that 에 marks static location or destination, while 에서 marks the location where an action takes place. Also, relative time words like 오늘 (today), 내일 (tomorrow), and 지금 (now) do not take 에.
