Comparison (보다)
보다
보다 means 'than' and is used to compare two things.
Pattern
Noun + 보다 + (더) + Adjective/Verb
Explanation
보다 is a particle meaning 'than' or 'more than,' used to make comparisons between two things. The pattern is 'A보다 B가 (adjective)' — B is more (adjective) than A. For example: '여름보다 겨울이 추워요' (Winter is colder than summer).
The item being compared against (the lesser or baseline item) takes 보다, while the item with the greater quality takes the subject marker 이/가. You can also add 더 (more) for emphasis: '커피보다 차가 더 좋아요' (I like tea more than coffee).
In spoken Korean, the word order is flexible. You might hear '차가 커피보다 좋아요' or '커피보다 차가 좋아요' — both are correct. 보다 always attaches to the noun it follows, indicating 'compared to this.' This pattern is essential for expressing preferences and making everyday comparisons.

Common Mistakes
Wrong
겨울보다 여름이 추워요.
Correct
여름보다 겨울이 추워요.
The noun before 보다 is the baseline for comparison. '여름보다 겨울이 추워요' means winter is colder than summer.
Wrong
커피보다 차를 좋아요.
Correct
커피보다 차가 더 좋아요.
좋다 takes 이/가 (subject marker), not 을/를. Also, adding 더 makes the comparison clearer.
